Antique and unusual ormolu mantel clock depicting Reims Cathedral with two mechaical movements. Exceptional quality and detail in the casting and gilding of this iconic French Cathedral. The original Cathedral built on the site of Roman baths was in existence certaibnly in the 5th century. Extended in the 12th century it was largely destroyed by fire in 1210. Rebuilding began in 1211 and the Cathedral that now stands is the Cathedral where the majority of French Kings were crowned. The dial of the clock is where the Rose Window of the Cathedral is and the dial has 12 porcelain chapters. The movement is of 8 day duration and is regulated by a silk suspended pendulum. The movement set below the timekeeping movement, operates the striking of the bell and is by the famous supplier of movements for automatons, Cailly. French circa 1835. 20 inches high by 14 inches wide by 6 inches deep ( 50 cm by 35 cm by 15 cm).
