Antique French Greek Revolution or Hellenistic mantel clock of Greek hero on horseback.
Constructed of the very finest cast bronze and fire gilded ormolu and in excellent original condition.
The rearing horse beautifully modelled, cast and finished in patinated bronze.
The typical rectangular base with bracket fee and swept plinth.
The clock itself set in a naturalistic rocky outcrop and has a silvered engine turned dial within a fine ormolu bezel. The hands are of blued steel and are of moon form.
The movement is of 8 day duration and strikes the hours and halves upon a cast French bell. The timekeeping is regulated by a silk suspended pendulum. The movement is numbered 1593 and signed in script E.Ls
The figure is of a Turkish cavalryman and his rearing horse caught in battle, beneath the horse can be seen a dagger and a Turkish head dress, so this scene is taken from the heat of battle.
France circa 1825-30.
19.5 inches high by 12.5 inches wide by 5.25 inches deep ( 48.75 cm by 31.25 cm by 13 cm).
The inspiration for this clock is undoubtably from the paintings of Carle Vernet an early war artist, if you like, who accompanied Napoleon throughout his middle eastern campaign and afterwards.
