Antique and magnificent monumental version of the iconic clock depicting Psyche and Cupid. This verson dating from circa 1820-30 is by JB Marchand a re-knowned bronzier and it differs from the more common Claud Michalon version. The Michalon clock has Cupid and Psyche entwined over the clock while this one has the two lovers talking across the clock.
Marchand has used a fine combination of rouge marble and fire gilded ormolu with the patinated bronze figure to great efect. The marble is in excellent condition and of a lovely colour. Both the finishes to the ormolu and patinated bronze are original.
The clock face of gilt bronze with gilt bronze hands is flanked by two flaming torches of ormolu.
The base has an applied ormolu mount of Cupids arrow passing through a wreath and ribbon.
The clock stands on a further ormolu base with stiff leaf and dart decoration and has fine ormolu winged paw feet.
The movement is of 8 day duration and regulated by a silk suspended pendulum, striking the hours and halves on a fine cast bell by means of the countwheel.
The dial is signed J B Marchand 57 Rue Richelieu. Tardy has him working at this address until 1850 but the family had been working in Paris since the early 18th century.
