Fine, rare, early form French grand sonnerie carriage clock, alarm and subsidiary calendar dials.
Fine and rare antique early form French grand sonnerie carriage clock also having alarm and subsidiary calendar dials. Superb one piece case beautifully engraved over the entire surface including finials and handle and retaining its original fire/mercury gilding. The engraving is predominently of floral and Arabesque patterns. The dial mask is also fully engraved and again has its original gilding. The main dial of white enamel for hours and minutes, with three subsidiary dials, the central dial for the alarm set, the left hand dial for day of the week and the right hand dial for the day of the month. The hands are all of blued steel. The movement has two cast bells in a nest. The large bell for striking the hours while the smaller bell is for the quarters and for the alarm. There are three striking hammers. Unusually the setting for grand and petite sonnerie and silent are via a lever on the backplate of the movement. More generally in later clocks the setting lever is set beneath the clock. The clock is technically an eight day clock but will normally run for considerably longer. The grand sonnerie strikes the hours and quarters at every quarter on two bells.. The petit sonnerie will strike the hour on the hour and then every quarter on two bells. By pressing the repeat button the clock will strike on demand the last hour and the last quarter hour. All five bevelled glasses are in perfect condition. France circa 1840. 7.75 inches high ( handle up, 6.25 inches handle down), 4.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches deep ( 19.375 cm ( 15.625 cm) by 11.25 cm by 8.75 cm)
