Antique and magnificent French Charles X clock of Jason and the Golden Fleece in patinated bronze, ormolu and antique vert marble. A very large, bold and dramatic clock, sparing in its mounts which makes it in turn all the more spectacular as the eye is not confused by a multiplicity of mounts. This is an interpretation of one aspect the well known Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts. Here he slays the dragon protecting the Golden Fleece. Jason can be seen in full armour with sword in hand reaching out for the fleece on the tree branch and standing on the body of the dragon. Massive marble base and set on four large paw feet. Original gilding and patinated bronze, all in excellent condition. Unusually the case in signed in the bronze on the tree " Le Roy a Paris". The movement is a silk suspended 8 day movement regulated by a silk suspended pendulum, striking the hours and halves on a bell. The movement, dial and bezel are all numbered 190 and the backplate of the movement is fully stamped LEROY & FILS, HGERS DU ROI A PARIS. Charles X is the reigning monarch and this stamp indicated that these makers were clockmakers to this king. The movement is dated 1828. 26 inches high by 16 inches wide and 8 inches deep ( 65 cm by 40 cm by 20 cm)
