An extremely rare antique English George III Rococco pressed tortoiseshell, ormolu and Battersea enamel snuff box.
This beautiful oblong box is in pristine condition and has been well cared for throughout the past 250 years.
The top and bottom is decorated with C scrolls and trailing flowers over a base decoration of four brick edged triangles.
The sides also decorated with "C" scrolls and trailing flowers.
All the tortoiseshell is in mint condition.
The thumb piece is in the form of a scrolling shell pattern, while the scalloped hinge is beautifully made. All metalwork is in perfect condition and the condition and lustre of the ormolu makes it almost indistinguishable from 15 carat gold.
Inside the lid of the box is a superb piece of English enamel. Something I have personally not seen before on a box of this type. The enamel appears to be in quite perfect condition and I believe was made specifically for this box as the fit is so perfect with spandrel finishing in each of the corners.
The scene is English pastoral with a milkmaid milking a cow while sheep lay down around her and a man standing to one side takes a drink. She is by a lake and weir with a rocky outcrop to her left. In the distandce is another cow and more sheep while further up river is a fisherman fishing with rod and line with a house on the opposite bank. Exceptional quality painting of incredible detail.
English circa 1760.
