Antique French Empire ormolu clock of Venus holding Cupid, a symbol of fidelity. She is seen holding Cupid as though about to clip his wings. Set on six massive ormolu feet, the D ended base is decorated heavily. There is an applied ormolu mask at each end with Amthemion. To the centre of the base is a lovely applied ormolu plaque of two putti sitting back to back against a lyre. Their legs turn into scrolling foilage. Above this and below the dial is another magnificent ormolu plaque in high relief of two massive Griffins on either side of a cornucopia vase of plenty. Surmounting the clock is the figure of Venus in classical dress with her beribboned hair up holding the winged cupid. The fine white convex enamel dial with Roman hour chapters and Arabic numerals at the quarters. Two very finely cast and chisseled gilt bronze hands. Surrounding the dial a very finely cast and finished ormolu bezel decorated with a Greek Key design and Amthemion. The dial signed Armingaud L'aine a Paris. The movement is an 8 day silk suspension movement striking the hours and halves on a fine cast bell. Armingaud L'aine was working at the Rue Meslay, Bd de la Porte St-Martin from 1806-13. This clock is dated in the movement 1811. France 1811. 17 inches high by 13 inches wide by 4.5 inches deep ( 42.5 cm by 32.5 cm by 11.25 cm).
