Antique patinated bronze figural inkwell with the detachable cover applied with Knights fighting on horses.
A magnificent figural inkwell of medieval soldiers or knights fighting on horseback.
The two figures, one unmounted and standing across his fallen horse, are in a fight to the death.
Both the men are in full armour and fighting with swords and dagger. The horses are also in full regalia. They are on a naturalistic base scattered with discarded shields and broken swords.
Once this cover is lifted off it reveals a cut glass inkwell within the base.
The base consists of a patinatedbronze series of stepped bases with typical English knurling designs on the first two steps.
A series of four steps lead up to the stem holding the bowl which in turn holds the inkwell itself.
The bowl has three evenly spaced winged lion monopedia holding up the outside rim of the bowl and btween these is heavily cast acanthus decoration.
This is an extraordinary Gothic desk inkwell of impressive size.
English mid 19th century circa 1840-60.
