Fine antique French porcelain and ormolu mantel clock with two figures beside a globe.

Fine antique French porcelain and ormolu mantel clock with two figures beside a globe.
Fine and unusual antique French porcelain and ormolu mantel clock with two figures beside a globe. Beautifully cast and gilt bronze mantel clock with mounts of flowing Acanthus leaf. Standing upon its original gilt wood stand the clock sits upon scrolling bracket feet. Surmounting the domed top to the clock is a fine globe in ormolu and silvered bronze. To the left of the globe is a boy putti with a pair of dividers in his hand while to the right is a girl putti consulting a book. This clock was not a mixture of mounts and porcelain from stock but specially constructed as the porcelain plaque below the dial shows a classical woman with putti making calculations on a globe. So the clock is specifically made with astronomy in mind. Further porcelain plaques decorate the sides of the clock. The jewelled porcelain dial is beautifully decorated and features Chronos, the god of time to the centre and the hour chapters in white porcelain. The 8 day movement, key wound, strikes the hours and halves on a bell. France circa 1860-80. 19 inches high by 10.5 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep ( 47.5 cm by 26.25 cm by 16.25 cm) on base.
