Antique French Charles X mantel clock by Guyerdet of Apollo's Muse Erato. One of Apollos nine Muses who presided over tender and romantic poetry. She is usually represented crowned with myrtle and roses. She tends to appear thoughtful and often with lighted flambeau by her representing the heat of love. Erato leans on the clock housing over a book and a myrtle wreath. The case of the clock is profusely decorated to the front of the case with items associated with her. To the sides of the clock housing are flaming flambeau and to the top spandrel corners are flaming torches born by wings over swags of myrtle. Bating swans are further down and below them is a bookcase bewtween to further flambeau. The main base is decorated to the front with Amthemion and cornucopia. Two winged putti sit upon floral stools, reading on either side of a bust of Homer within a wreath. The engine turned dial has Roman numerals and blued steel hands. The dial is surrounded by an ormolu bezel of myrtle. The movement is of 8 day duration and regulated by a silk suspended pendulum. It strikes the hours and halves on a bell. The movement is signed by Guyerdet who was working in the Rue Saint-Martin and Rue Meslay between 1810-1830, it is a Pons blank signed on the frontplate. France dated in the movement 1824. 19.5 inches high by 13 inches wide by 5 inches deep ( 48.75 cm by 32.5 cm by 12.5 cm).
