Antique French Empire ormolu portico clock. Set upon a rectangular ormolu base with moulding to the top edge. Set upon the base are four female caryatid figures in classical dress. Each stands upon a circular pedestal with square base. These pedestals are decorated with engine turning. Each caryatid springs from a flower base with four leaves. The caryatids wear a tasseled cushion on their heads and between them support the pediment in which the clock is set. This has arches to the side in which are set Amthemion. The top has a stiff leaf moulding rising to a flat top. All the ormolu is fire gilt and entirely original. The convex white enamel dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for each quarter. The cast gilt bronze hands are superb and all is surrounded by a fine ormolu bezel with concentric lines of guilloche decoration, Amthemion and beading. To the top spandrel corners are applied ormolu floral mounts. The movement is a large early movement with silk suspension and striking the hours and halves on a bell by means of a countwheel. France circa 1810. 14 inches high by 8.25 inches wide by 5 inches deep ( 35 cm by 20.625 cm by 12.5 cm).
