Antique French Charles X ormolu mantel clock depicting part of the myth of Psyche and Cupid. This magnificently decorated clock with completely original fire gilt ormolu is in fine condition. Set on bracket feet and rectangular base rising to a moulding decorated with harebells and forget-me-not flowers. Above this is a superb inset plaque of Psyche and Cupid embracing close to a classical altar and among flowers and butterflies. This plaque is cast in high relief and beautifully finished by the chisseleur. Set on a platform is the clock housing which is circular and set upon vitruvian scrolls. The sides of the clock housing instead of as usual left plain is a riot of flowers in high relief, superbly cast and finished. The dial is very finely cast and is most unusual. To the centre the figures of Psyche and Cupid stand each side of aan altar with Apollo looking over, they are holding hands. The altar is set in the heavens with stars all about them and with rolling clouds below. There is an outer annular ring containing the hour chapters and between all the chapters are the twelve signs of the Zodiac, beautifully cast. An outer ring is marked for the minutes. The hands are of blued steel and are of Breguet moon form. The movement is of 8 day duration, regulated by a silk suspended pendulum and strikes the hours and halves by means of the countwheel strike on a fine cast bell. The movement is dated 1831 within the movement. 20 inches high by 9.5 inches wide and 5.5 inches deep ( 50 cm by 23.75 cm by 13.75 cm).
