An exceptional antique Grand Sonnerie, Petite Sonnerie and repeater strut clock in the manner of Thomas Cole.
The fabulous ormolu case with original gilding and fine engraving. Typical Cole folding strut foot and engraved handle to top of case.
The silvered and engraved dial with further ormolu mask is quite typical.
Roman chapters and fleus de lis hands.
The clockmaker has taken as his model the Thomas Cole clock numbered 19 in Hawkins book Thomas Cole and Victorian Clockmaking.
However unlike any of Coles productions this exceptional clock has extraordinary features.
A steel lever on the left hand side of the case has next to it heavily engraved "sonne" and "silence". On the right hand side another steel lever which has next to it heavily engraved "Grande Sonnerie" and "Petit Sonnerie", furthermore there is a third button just above this heavily engraved "repeter".
This clock will strike the quarters on two gongs and strike the hours. If using the grand sonnerie repeat it will strike the last hour and the quarters passed the hour.
This clock will do this for 8 days.
It has a vertical lever escapement.
It is wound by two side by side integral turnbuckle keys. The regulator to the lever escapement is protected by a dust cover as is the hand adjust.
The clock is as far as I can tell, unsigned, although I believe it to be Swiss.
It almost certainly dates from about 1880.
6 inches high by 4.125 inches wide by 1.5 inches deep ( 15 cm by 10.3 cm by 3.75 cm).
