Antique French mantel clock of Ceres, in Ormolu from the Charles X period
Antique French Charles X ormolu clock of Ceres. The clock with excellent original fire gilded ormolu stands upon four bun feet, the front two decorated with sheafs of wheat. The base of the clock is decorated with three fine ormolu mounts, the centre mount depicting a bowl of fruit, corn and a wreaths of flowers, and is flanked by two mounts depicting a wreath and crossed spade and rake. To the right of the clock case stands a torch and wreath, and a sheaf of wheat. To the top of the clock case stands a bowl overflowing with fruit, vegetables and flowers, whilst a wonderfully cast ceres stands to the other side of the case, holding more wheat. Ceres is the Roman goddess of corn and harvests. The luxuriant vegetation illustrates the theme of abundance. The silk suspension, 8 day movement is regulated by a countwheel, and strikes the hours and half hours on a bell, and is signed Brevett a Paris. The fine, white enamel dial with breguet style moon form hands. 52cm high by 41cm wide and 12cm deep
