Magnificent pair of English Regency figural candlesticks in the manner of Thomas Hope. The patinated bronze vestal maiden in classical dress, superbly modelled, cast and finished stands upon a circular ormolu base decorated at its outer edge with basket weave and within by a circle of milling. The base rises to the pediment on which the vestal stands and this is decorated with a moulding of the same basket weave decoration. Upon her head is an ormolu tasselled cushion on which again is a basket with reeding and a particular baskert weave decoration in squares. On top of the basket is a superb ormolu cornucopia of ormolu flowers and fruit. The patinated bronze and ormolu is entirely original and in condition. The work is of the very best quality. England circa 1800-5. 10.5 inches by 4.25 inches diameter (26.25 cm by 10.625 cm. A candlestick of very similar form can be seen in " Thomas Hope Regency Designer " Edited by David Watkin and Philip Hewat-Jaboor pp 98 and the particular square basket weave decoration is illustrated in the same book on a Paul Storr fruit basket carrying Hope's arms and designed and commissioned by Hope and hallmarked for 1797/8, pp 439.
