Antique pair of George III Ormolu and marble Chambers pattern Griffin Candlesticks. In the famous William Chambers pattern. Sir William Chambers (1726-1796) was the court architect to George III and produced many designs for Matthew Boulton. The design for these candlesticks was published in the third edition of his Treatise on the Decorative parts of Civil Architecure of 1791. These are a lovely pair of the most beautiful and elegant of neo classical candlesticks. Set on rectangular white marble bases with an ormolu leaf and bead moulding. The griffin sits upon an ormolu plate. The patinated bronze Griffin beautifully modelled, sits with head raised, wings open and crest up. His tail becomes a gilt bronze swirl of acanthus. On the griffin's head sits the finely tooled candlestick with concentric circles of beading, waves and shells. The drip pans below are of leaf formation. English circa 1790. 9 Inches High
