Antique Patinated bronze of a gladiator. The sculpture is a famous work by Louis Leon Cugnot (1835-1894) Son of sculptor Etienne Cugnot. He entered the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in the 1850s under teachers Francisque Joseph Duret and Georges Diebolt. The piece depicts Corybante hearing the cries of the child Jupiter. Corybante, stands with his sword and shield raised to protect the child at his feet. Wonderful quality casting and execution, with superb patination. Signed on the base Cugnot and stamped Marcel Guillemard and number 1 for the fondeur or foundry French Circa 1920 67cm High
