A rare and unusual French Empire clock depicting Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe". It shows Crusoe wearing goatskin, carrying his rifle and a palm umbrella and having scabbards in his belt. Atop his umbrella is a parrot. To his right stands a tree, housing the clock movement, with reeds and finally detailed and cast mount depicting a footprint, as if in the sand. The rectancular base with applied mount of anthemion, and the clock stands upon four toupee feet. This model stands upon a superb satinwood base. The fine ormolu bezel surrounds the white enamel convex dial with arabic numerals, and fine breguet half moon hands. Very unusually, this clock movement is an 8 day, silk suspension pendulum movement, rather than a 30 hour watch movement, which is what clocks of this size usually have. The fire gilded mercury ormolu is entirely original. The same model can be seen in the Musee Francois Dusberg collection. French circa 1805 Clock and base 24cm Long by 27cm High and 11.5cm deep without base 13.9cm wide by 22.5cm High and 5.6cm deep.
